DIY Christian

Ephesians 4:11-16 ESV And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, …

I am in the process of installing a small section of fence in my yard to keep my new puppy, a big lab, in my back yard.  After making a few calls I quickly discovered that the cost to install a small fence to keep her out of my flower bed is very expensive so I decided to check out DIY fences.

It made me wonder what DIY Christianity would look like.  If there was a Pinterest board or a website for it I think it would look a little like this.

DIY Christianity

  1.  Read the Bible for yourself.  No need to have a Pastor teach you anything.  I am smart enough to read it and understand it on my own.
  2.  Going to church isn’t important. Who needs to GO to church.  I can pick one I like on TV.  I can pick 3 or 4 different ones and watch them anytime I want to, while in my pj’s or cleaning house.
  3. Bible Studies aren’t necessary.  I can buy all kind of Christian book about anything and do my own study.  There is no reason to get dressed, take extra time away from my already busy schedule to meet with people to read and talk about a book together.  Study on a book of the Bible…well refer to number 1.
  4. Church Events are an inconvenience –  My schedule is already busy.  I clean house, cut grass, grocery shop, do laundry and home maintenance all day on Saturday. Sunday is my day to rest and I am too tired after working all week to add anything else to my schedule.
  5.   If I do go to church I don’t commit to just one.  I prefer to visit other churches to keep it interesting – The good news is if I don’t go to the same church each week then I won’t get bored with the same people, same music, or the same preacher.  I won’t be ask to volunteer and I won’t feel like I have to tithe since I don’t use their stuff every week.

Ok so maybe this DIY Christianity is real.  I think there are a lot of Christians that fall into DIY Christianity but that is not what God intended for us.  The scripture today says that he has equipped the saints to teach us and help us grow.  Without going to the same church and sitting under one pastors teaching it is hard to Christians to grow.  Bouncing around and not being committed to a body of believers in a church building allows you to be blown to and fro, which is not of God either.  Find a good church and get involved.  If you are trying DIY Christianity, try the real thing.  It is better than anything you can do on your own.  I PROMISE!

Excited About Church

Psalm 57:7
I Will Sing and Give Praise

Today‘s Truth
My heart is confident, O God.
My heart is confident.
I want to sing and make music. Psalms 57:7 (GW)

From My Heart To Yours
I don’t know about you but I am ready for Sunday morning praise and worship at my church. Even though I had the flu all week and been stuck in bed I can’t wait to sing, pray and fellowship with my Christian family tomorrow.

How are you praising God? Are you spending more time talking about what is going wrong in your life than focusing on what good things God is doing for you? It is so easy to fall into the negative mode. We need to take time to sing God’s praises.

Here are few things that the Bible says about praise in the Psalms:

Psalm 22:25 My praise shall be of you in the great assembly
Psalm 45:17 …the people shall praise You forever and forever
Psalm 71:6 …My praise shall be continually of You
Psalm 119:164 Seven times a day I praise you
Psalm 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord

Have you been too quite in your praise of God lately. I challenge you to take Psalm 119:164 and use it this week to help you focus on singing God’s praises.

If you are a negative person, and you know if you are, then your task is for every negative comment you make in the next week you have to say 7 good things that God has done for you. The challenge is to do it every time and for an entire week. If you really want to change your habit of being negative take the time to write the negative comments and the 7 good things God has done for you.

Maybe you aren’t a negative person but you have a hard time praising God out loud. Your challenge this week is to find a way to say out loud 7 times a day something God has blessed you with. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to other people about it then start by just saying it out loud to God, your spouse or your pet. The more you praise him out loud the easier it will get. For you to really change your habit I encourage you to write 7 things at the beginning of the day and check them off your list as you say them out loud.

God is so good to us. He has blessed us with salvation, families, food, shelter, health, a church, freedom and the list goes on. We were created to praise Him. Don’t let this week go by without taking time to praise him.

Let’s Pray
Father, we thank you for loving us as you do. Forgive us for the times we fail to praise you. Help us each day to open our eyes to see how you are blessing us. Led us to share your praises with others to help encourage them. In Jesus name. Amen.

Why wait. Is there something you feel led to praise God for now? Share your praise with everyone by leaving a comment below.
